St. Thomas Aquinas Homeschoolers of the Rochester Area - Discipline

Discipline is defined as training of the mind and character. It is a way of life in accordance with the rules. It means self-control, order, and obedience.

Discipline sets limits - limits which are necessary for survival in life. Infants, toddlers, school-agers, and adults need limits. Due to the grace of the sacrament of Matrimony, the parents do know what is best for their children. They, therefore, must set the limits.

Training young children is hard work with daily conflict of wills. It is essential to pray and pray often. Pray as a family; pray with the children. Begin each day with the Mass and end it with the family rosary.

Here are some hints for Homeschoolers on the topic of discipline:

  1. Teach and post the "house rules" before beginning the school year. Give consequences for the breakage of these rules that are appropriate for each age group.
  2. Incorporate Dad in some school-related activities. He is a strong authority figure.
  3. Have the children help in some of the planning. (choosing particular projects or field trip destinations)
  4. Emphasize each child's strengths and build on them. If the work is too difficult, re-evaluate because school failure can lead to discipline problems.
  5. Memory work for the child can help him with self-discipline.
  6. Meet with other Homeschoolers for a weekly review.
  7. Let the child be responsible for some of the order in his environment (desk, study space, room) as well as the family's.

Each family may use these or any number of other ways to establish a discipline in their school. That discipline will not be isolated. If it is established, it will be reflected in all areas of your children's lives; if it is not, then lack-of-discipline will be shown in all areas also.

So, pray hard and love those disorderly, sometimes disobedient children to greatness.
