St. Thomas Aquinas Homeschoolers of the Rochester Area - Large Families Throughout the curriculum was printed "Adjust the lesson plan to your child." I had been concerned about staying on a specific schedule, without thinking of the joy of learning, or the special needs of my children. I called Dr. Mary Kay Clark, who is the foundress and head of Seton Home Study. She recommended I include the younger, more adaptable students with the older children in their lessons. She encouraged me to be flexible, and just communicate any changes I had made in their lesson plans. Dr. Clark also suggested to let the older children help teach their siblings. It is good review for them and helps build skills and confidence in the subject, and in themselves. It also helps out the parents! I have since relaxed and followed God's direction. I have asked for abundant graces, and motivation, and for the children's motivation. Our prayers are being answered. Some other benefits that became apparent, were the bonding among the children. As I was expecting our 8th child the end of our first school year, the children truly bonded and helped me immensely. I feel very blessed with all the gifts God showered upon us, especially that first year. Other helpful, not original, ideas to help the large homeschooling family are to have your children do daily chores. The younger children do simple tasks such as setting the table, peeling vegetables, empty the clothes dryer, and sweep the floor. The older children do more complex chores such as sorting and starting the laundry, planning and preparing meals, cleaning and vacuuming. My son just reminded me of cutting the grass, raking and shoveling. Another benefit for me, is the fullest sense of motherhood. It affords me the opportunity for the one on one bonding time I always wanted to share with my children. I also appreciate all the material I am learning. There are many challenges to homeschooling a large family, but with God's grace and a great deal of humility, it can be one of life's richest blessings.
